Understanding diagnostic ultrasound imaging

Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique that allows me to see what’s happening inside your muscles, tendons, and joints in real time.

Unlike X-rays or MRI scans, ultrasound shows structures as they move — I can watch tendons glide, muscles contract, and joints move dynamically. This makes it invaluable for pinpointing musculoskeletal problems such as tendon tears, inflammation, or joint impingement.

During your scan, I’ll apply a clear gel to the skin and move a small probe over the area. You may feel gentle pressure, but it’s not painful. I follow the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) guidelines to ensure the highest safety standards.

What conditions can diagnostic ultrasound identify?

Ultrasound imaging is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in musculoskeletal medicine.
It helps identify a wide range of problems involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints — all in real time.

During your assessment, I can diagnose or assess:

  • Tendon problems – such as tendonitis, tendinopathy, partial or complete tears, ruptures, and calcific tendonitis
  • Ligament injuries – including sprains, overstretching, and partial or full tears
  • Muscle injuries – strains, tears, and soft tissue damage
  • Joint conditions – arthritis, effusions (fluid), synovitis, or inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Nerve entrapments – like carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, or tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Cysts and soft tissue lumps – including ganglion cysts and lipomas
  • Bursitis – affecting shoulders, hips, knees, and elbows
  • Foreign bodies – splinters, glass, or debris embedded under the skin
  • Stress fractures – visible in some cases even before they appear on X-ray in early stages, although MRI remains the reference standard.

Because ultrasound can show your structures in motion, it often detects issues that static scans (like X-rays or MRIs) might miss.

I don’t perform ultrasound scans for:

  • Spine or spinal nerves
  • Non-musculoskeletal problems (e.g., pregnancy, vascular, or abdominal scans)
  • Children under 10

Do you actually need an ultrasound scan?

Not every problem requires ultrasound. Sometimes a detailed physical examination gives the answer; other times, MRI or X-ray imaging is more appropriate.
